Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL) 2025: What It Means for Skilled Migration to Australia

Welcome Skilled Migrants…

Australia’s migration system changed dramatically in December 2024 with the launch of the new Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL). If you’re a skilled worker or an employer, this list has major implications for how you live, work, and grow in Australia.

At Monkeys, we’ve already helped countless professionals and businesses adapt to the new system. Here’s everything you need to know about CSOL and how to take advantage of the latest Australian migration reforms.

What Is the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL)?

CSOL is a comprehensive overhaul of Australia’s skilled migration program. It replaces outdated occupation lists with a modern, flexible framework covering 456 in-demand occupations. Developed by Jobs and Skills Australia (JSA), the CSOL is designed to align Australia’s migration intake with current labour market needs.

By consolidating occupation lists and streamlining processes, CSOL makes it easier for employers to sponsor international workers and for skilled migrants to secure employment and residency in Australia.

Key Changes to Skilled Migration in Australia (2025)

Introduction of the Skills in Demand Visa (Subclass 482)
Launched on 7 December 2024, the new Skills in Demand (SID) Visa replaced the previous Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visa. It simplifies the visa application process, prioritizing high-demand sectors such as healthcare, technology, construction, education, and engineering. This visa offers faster processing, simplified sponsorship requirements, and clearer pathways to permanent residency.

Three New Visa Streams
The Skills in Demand Visa includes the following streams:

  • Specialist Skills Stream – For high-income earners earning $135,000+ in essential sectors

  • Core Skills Stream – Targeting skilled occupations identified by JSA across priority industries

  • Labour Agreement Stream – For roles covered under industry or employer-specific agreements

Work Experience Requirement Reduced
Applicants now only need one year of relevant work experience within the last five years (down from two years), making the process faster and more accessible for international talent.

Pathways to Permanent Residency in Australia

Skilled migrants working under the Skills in Demand Visa can transition to the Subclass 186 Permanent Residence visa through the Temporary Residence Transition (TRT) stream. This creates a structured, achievable path to PR for eligible workers.

Additionally, CSOL supports the Direct Entry stream of the Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS Subclass 186), helping employers secure long-term talent while offering stability for migrants.

New Occupations Added to CSOL in 2025

Several professions were added to the CSOL, opening new doors for skilled workers. Notable additions include:

  • Beauty Therapist

  • Child Care Worker

  • Family Support Worker

  • Office Manager

  • Content Creator (Marketing)

  • Cyber Security Analyst

  • Data Analyst

  • Cyber Security Manager

If your job is on this list, now is the perfect time to apply.

Occupations Removed from CSOL

Some occupations were removed from the list. If you work in any of the roles below, you may need to explore alternative migration pathways:

  • Childcare Centre Manager (134111)

  • Graphic Designer (232411)

  • Nurse Manager (254311)

  • Interpreter (272412)

  • Tennis Coach (452316)

Why CSOL Matters for Employers and Skilled Professionals

For Employers
CSOL reduces red tape and makes it easier to sponsor overseas workers. Businesses can now access a broader, more relevant talent pool to meet labour shortages quickly and efficiently.

For Skilled Professionals
The new system makes it easier to migrate, work, and settle in Australia. With more occupations included and faster pathways to permanent residency, CSOL is a game-changer for international professionals.

What’s Coming Next in Australian Migration?

CSOL is just the beginning. The Australian Government also launched the National Innovation Visa in December 2024, aimed at globally recognised talent in tech, science, and innovation. This visa provides another pathway for high-achieving individuals looking to contribute to Australia’s future economy.
